Get ready for some great local sports in Pelham just in time for the 2014/2015 hockey season!
On Monday, July 21, 2014 Town Council signed a seven-year lease with the Pelham Pirates Junior B Hockey Club, officially welcoming them to the community.
“We are very excited about this great opportunity for Pelham and our minor hockey,” said Mayor Dave Augustyn. “It’s a commitment to the community and has great potential for both the Town and the Pirates.”
Upon receiving the go-ahead from the Ontario Hockey Association, the team (formally known as the Port Colborne Pirates) will move into the Pelham Arena on 1120 Haist Street for the 2014/2015 and 2015/1016 seasons. The agreement is flexible so that if the Town decides to construct a new multi-faceted community centre, the Pelham Pirates could operate there for an additional five years.
In the immediate, the team’s change rooms will be facilitated through a temporary portable building in close proximity to the arena, and home games will be on Friday nights, with the option of Tuesday nights when necessary. The team will also operate the concession for the year, thereby helping the Town decrease its operating expenses for the arena.
“Junior hockey gives the community something to rally around,” said Pelham Pirates franchise owner Tim Toffolo. “Pelham has welcomed us with open arms and we are happy to be here.”
The team requires approximately 5.5 hours of ice time a week and has the full support of the Pelham Minor Hockey Association and Niagara Centre Figure Skating Club, who also currently utilize the facility.
Pelham Minor Hockey Association President Byron Sinclair called the team’s move to Pelham “a great idea”, saying he hopes to see some Pelham athletes on the team.
The Pelham Pirates are one of 27 Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League teams within the Niagara Region and Southwestern Ontario. Tryouts will begin this August; if interested, please contact Tim Toffolo at (905) 658-2190 or tim@royallepage.ca.
