Residents, businesses, tenants and organizations within the immediate vicinity of downtown Fenwick will notice the restoration of Fenwick's iconic flagpole begin Thursday, March 28, 2013, at the intersection of Canboro Road and Maple Street. A photo opportunity commemorating the restoration will take place Thursday, March 28, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. when Town contractor Ewing Flagpole Co. Inc. carefully removes the top section of the flagpole.
The planned restoration work entails adding a pulley system to allow for raising and lowering the flag on specific occasions, as well as, minor structural reinforcements and improvements. Travelers to the area may encounter intermittent traffic restrictions until approximately April 12, 2013, when a brand new 4 x 8 Canadian flag will flow 51 feet tall and definitively mark the spot where WWII soldiers were welcomed home in 1946.
"Preserving this cornerstone of Fenwick's history will undoubtedly help showcase Pelham's rich heritage, culture and community," commented Mayor Dave Augustyn of Pelham.
Joint funding for the flagpole restoration includes donations from the 150th Fenwick Anniversary Committee and the Town's capital budget.
The revitalized flagpole promises to be the highlight of Fenwick's 160th Anniversary on June 1, 2013, and the Pelham Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee will recommend Council designate the flagpole as a heritage site during the April 15, 2013, Regular Meeting of Council.
Further streetscape beautification of the Fenwick downtown core commences in early summer.
