During a Special Meeting of Council on Monday, March 25, 2013, Pelham Council adopted a bold master action plan to embrace strategic and creative problem solving across the corporation.
Town staff presented debriefs on specific action plans centered on the primary goal of How Might We Improve the Quality of Life in Pelham, and illustrated how they utilized the Simplexity™ system to explore creative solutions to the following questions:
• How might we continually improve customer service and service our customers better?
• How might we devise a method for Council, the Public and Staff at all levels to identify areas of opportunity?
• How might Council make better and quicker decisions?
"Council and staff have already used this creative problem solving process successfully on some key issues, like identifying the best location for the Riehl Skatepark, developing an Environmental Protection By-law, and helping alleviate parking challenges in Downtown Fonthill,” explained Mayor Dave Augustyn. “Council has now directed staff to draft a policy to embed problem solving into the way the Town serves the community and does everyday activities,” added the Mayor.
The proposed policy and implementation plan will be returned to Council for consideration during the May 21, 2013, Policy and Priorities Meeting.
Designed by internationally acclaimed and academically renowned creative theorist Dr. Min Basadur, Professor Emeritus of Innovation in the Michael G. DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, the Basadur Applied Creativity theory tackles solving complex problems through inspired thinking.
Founded on established cognitive models of intelligence and educational psychology, the Basadur method follows eight concrete steps to productively and efficiently identify issues and explore solutions. The Town’s support of these forward-thinking principles promises unprecedented staff and public engagement in core community issues.
