FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 26, 2018
Pelham, ON– The Town of Pelham was made aware of the Voice of Pelham’s recent membership with the NNC and looks forward to rebuilding the relationship that has been fractured in recent months.
Following a March 21, 2018, Town statement which called for the Voice of Pelham to publish their ethical guidelines and join theNational News Media Council (NNC), the Town has learned that the publication has done both.
“I applaud Mr. Burket, publisher, for publically disclosing the ethical guidelines that the Voice will follow – and I thank him for his commitment to adhering to them,” said Mayor Dave Augustyn. “Finally, I commend the Voice for joining the National NewsMedia Council. I look forward to a better working relationship as a result.”
The NNC, of which the Voice of Pelham was not a member until late last week, is the organization that considers, mediates, and releases decisions on complaints made against a newspaper.
Since Pelham’s March 21 statement, the Town spoke with representatives of the Canadian Association of Journalists, News Media Canada, and the National NewsMedia Council in order to better understand, amongst other things, a local newspaper’s framework of accountability and to help with a projected path toward reconciliation.
“I hope that this through these actions and improved dialogue, we can all concentrate on working together to improve the quality of life in Pelham,” said Augustyn.
