Protecting Pelham’s Trees Program Launches to Recognize and Safeguard Important Trees
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 24, 2025
Pelham, ON – The Town of Pelham is pleased to announce the launch of “Protecting Pelham’s Trees”, a new community-driven initiative that empowers residents to preserve and celebrate the Town’s valued tree canopy. This Council-supported program was identified as a priority in Pelham’s Strategic Plan and reinforces the Town’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and community pride.
“By protecting these significant trees, we are not only safeguarding Pelham’s environmental legacy but also embracing the responsibility to future generations,” said David Cribbs, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Pelham. “The introduction of this program demonstrates the Town’s dedication to preserving natural heritage. This is a great way to bring protection to notable elements of Pelham’s tree canopy, which is a key component of Pelham’s strategic plan. All residents can take pride in the fact that this community is an increasingly good steward of the landscape and tree canopy.”
Developed in collaboration with community members, council committees and local tree advocates, Protecting Pelham’s Trees allows residents to nominate trees on private property for formal designation as either a Significant Community Tree or a Heritage Tree. Trees that meet the established criteria will receive legal protection under the Niagara Region Woodland Conservation By-law, ensuring they cannot be removed or altered without proper authorization.
Residents are encouraged to get involved by nominating a tree on their property that holds special significance. To qualify as a Significant Community Tree, a tree must be in good health, be native to Ontario or considered rare or unique in the region, and have aesthetic, cultural, or personal value. Heritage Trees must also be in good health and be connected to a significant event, person, or group in Pelham’s history. In all cases, the tree must be located outside of a designated Sensitive Natural Area, and the property owner must complete and submit a nomination form.
The program also features the Plant a Tree Pledge, an opportunity for residents to make a personal commitment to the environment by planting a tree on their private property. This pledge supports long-term tree canopy health and helps ensure Pelham remains a green and vibrant place to live for generations to come.
