June 3, 2026
Pelham, ON – The Town of Pelham is excited to share that it has been awarded an Ontario Public Works Association Small Communities Project of the Year Award for the 2025 stormwater management pond rehabilitation program.
The Town’s 2025 Stormwater Management Pond Rehabilitation Program showcased a high standard of environmental protection, sustainable construction practices, and municipal stewardship. During the program three stormwater ponds situated within established urban residential neighbourhoods were rehabilitated ensuring improved performance while protecting surrounding natural features. The work was completed within environmentally sensitive areas regulated by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) and was led by Town of Pelham staff, with engineering and contracting work completed by Oakridge Group Inc. and Onterris (formerly known as Montrose Environmental).
“The support for and responsible leadership by council has resulted in projects that benefit Pelham now and into the future,” said Marvin Junkin, Town of Pelham Mayor. “Award-winning work reflects vision and I am proud of the way this council has worked together to ensure the necessary work is done in stormwater ponds that support the local waterways.”
Stormwater ponds provide an important function for the community and ensure that rainwater is managed to reduce flooding and improve overall water quality. The project team implemented rigorous erosion and sediment controls, adhered to all permitting requirements, and collaborated with environmental specialists while working within the stormwater pond sites. The 2025 stormwater management pond rehabilitation program also brings the municipality into compliance with MECP Legislation through the Consolidated Linear Infrastructure and Environmental Compliance Approval program.
"The work on these stormwater management ponds will ensure Pelham continues to provide residents with sustainable stormwater management infrastructure,” said Jason Marr, Director of Public Works. "It is great to see that this significant priority for Council has been recognized for its project success at the provincial level."
Ontario Public Works Association Project of the Year Awards were established to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing projects completed by small municipalities of less than 50,000 people. These awards also recognize the alliance between municipalities and the organizations that work together to complete critical public works projects.
Pelham remains committed to sustainability, regulatory compliance, and community protection as it continues stormwater management pond rehabilitation initiatives.
