Lincoln Pelham Public Library to Start $4 Million Renovation in Fonthill

Pelham, ON - The Lincoln Pelham Public Library (LPPL) is celebrating the start of construction for a planned $4 million, two-phase renovation of its Fonthill Branch. The branch will close at 2 pm on Saturday, August 29 to prepare for Phase One, with construction scheduled to begin in September and finish by spring 2027.

The community is invited to a “Cheers to the Next Chapter” celebration on Saturday, August 29. Drop in between 10 am to 2 pm to say hello to staff, enjoy light refreshments, share memories, take part in a “Checkout Challenge,” learn about library services during construction, and find out how to support the next chapter of the Fonthill Branch.

“We’re excited to get this important project underway,” says Julie Andrews, CEO and Chief Librarian. “The Fonthill Branch means so much to so many people, and this much-needed renovation will ensure the building is accessible, flexible, and welcoming for decades to come. We invite the community to join us as we celebrate the start of construction and give this cherished space the send-off it deserves.”

The temporary closure marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next. When the branch reopens in 2027, it will be known as the Coyne Family Branch in recognition of a leadership gift from longtime Fonthill residents Paul and Bernadette Coyne.

Phase One is part of a planned two-phase renovation of the nearly 40-year-old branch at 43 Pelham Town Square. Improvements in Phase One include a new entrance with automatic doors, accessible restrooms, and an enlarged and refurbished program room.

Phase Two will feature a reconfigured main level with more versatile spaces for programming, study, and collaboration. A passenger elevator will provide access to the basement, allowing staff workspace to shift downstairs and opening up 3,000 square feet of public space on the main level. Phase Two will begin when the necessary funds have been raised.

During the closure, Fonthill Branch users will have access to library materials and services through expanded hours at Maple Acre, additional Bookmobile stops in Fonthill, the Book Lending Machine at the Meridian Community Centre (MCC), and reciprocal borrowing at neighbouring libraries, including Welland, West Lincoln, and Thorold.

"I'm eagerly looking forward to the reopening of the library after renovations, which will be better suited to provide high-quality library programming for visitors," said Pelham Mayor Marvin Junkin. "During renovations, I encourage residents to continue using the many other library services available in our community, including the Book Lending Machine at the MCC."
 
Phase One, estimated at $1.5 million, is fully funded by the Town of Pelham. Fundraising continues for Phase Two, estimated at $2.5 million. More than 60% of the Next Chapter campaign goal has been raised, with $1.45 million remaining.
