Creative But Concerning: Town Responds to Stacked Picnic Table Prank in Peace Park

Press release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 8, 2025

Pelham, ON – For the second time this year, a group of unidentified individuals has used the early morning hours to pull off a bold and unusual prank in Peace Park, targeting the picnic tables used during the Town’s popular Summer Chill series.

In the most recent incident, caught on camera just after 1:00 a.m., the group impressively – and laboriously – stacked 15 wooden picnic tables nearly four metres high. Adding to the challenge, they also screwed the legs of each table to the one below, creating a towering structure that will require significant staff time and effort to disassemble.

While the stunt has certainly turned heads, Town staff have had to tape off the area with caution tape and redirect resources from other scheduled work to safely dismantle the stack ahead of this Thursday’s Summer Chill event. The picnic tables are heavily used by residents throughout the week and are essential to the community gathering that brings families and friends together for live music and food trucks every Thursday evening.

“We recognize the creativity, strength, and effort it took to pull this off,” said David Cribbs, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Pelham. “That said, we encourage these individuals to consider applying their time and talents in ways that benefit the community instead. They’ve clearly got the energy, ingenuity, and even teamwork – all great traits we’d love to see channeled into something positive for Pelham.”

The Town is asking residents to avoid the structure until it has been safely disassembled. Staff are working diligently to ensure Peace Park is ready for this week’s Summer Chill event and that the community can continue to enjoy this beloved summer tradition without interruption.
