Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Council received correspondence from the Save Your Skin Foundation requesting that the month of May be recognized as “Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month” in Pelham. During the month of May, residents are reminded of the importance of sun safety as over-exposure to UV radiation is one of the major causes of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. The town of Pelham council has proclaimed May 2026 as “Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month” in Pelham.

Fire Station #1 Project Update

Council received an update on the Fire Station #1 project that involves constructing a new single-story fire station to replace Fire Station #1, located at 177 RR 20, Fonthill, ON. The project has been awarded ad construction is scheduled to begin in May. The construction project will take place in two phases so the truck bays will continue to be operational throughout the project. In preparation for the construction, the fire administrative offices have been relocated to the lower level at 2 Pelham Town Square. The new station will include a 13,000 sq. ft. facility, featuring a 6,500 sq. ft. five-bay truck hall. The total project budget is $8 million, and the town is currently under budget by $742,000.

Red Light Camera Project Extension

Council received report 2026-0089 “Niagara Regional Courts Intermunicipal Agreement – Red Light Camera Project Extension,” and authorized the Mayor and Clerk to execute the Amending Agreement to the Niagara Region Courts Inter-Municipal Agreement to continue the Red Light Camera (RLC) program. The Region currently has an RLC installed at the intersection of Hwy 20 and RR 24 in the Town of Pelham. RLCs help reduce severe collision types, such as angle and head-on collisions, at signalized intersections, as part of the Region’s broader Vision Zero Road Safety initiative.

Council received memo 2026-0093 “Fonthill Lions Club land transfer to the Town of Pelham,” for information. The Fonthill Lions Club have signed an agreement to transfer the ownership of G.L. Under the agreement, the Fonthill Lions Club will continue to host events, meetings, and community programming at the park, while the Town of Pelham assumes responsibility for long-term maintenance, infrastructure, and future improvements. The lands will remain dedicated to public recreational use in perpetuity, ensuring that G.L. Klager Park continues to serve as a community asset for generations. A future recognition ceremony will be held at the park to highlight the shared commitment to preserving its legacy.
