Proclamation
World Hepatitis Day
July 28, 2017
WHEREAS, it is estimated that between 500,000 and 600,000 people in Canada are living with hepatitis B and C and are at risk for developing cirrhosis, liver failure, liver cancer and non-liver related manifestations; and
WHEREAS, over 110,000 people are infected with hepatitis C in Ontario and over 100,000 Ontarians are living with chronic hepatitis B, both of which are slow and progressive illnesses that gradually damage the liver; and
WHEREAS, an effective vaccine is available to prevent hepatitis B but there is no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C; and
WHEREAS, World Hepatitis Day is an opportunity to enhance public awareness and education, reduce stigma, foster tolerance and understanding, acknowledge those affected and explore ways to better address hepatitis B and C in the future;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Corporation of the Town of Pelham does hereby proclaim July 28th, 2017 as World Hepatitis Day, and
THAT the Pelham arches be lit in green on July 28, 2017 in support of World Hepatitis Day.
