On Monday, August 22, 2016, Pelham Council proclaimed September as School Crossing Guard Awareness Month to remind drivers and cyclists of the new Highway Traffic Act laws that went into effect earlier this year.
As of January 2016, motorists can NO longer turn left, right or proceed through a crosswalk on the clear half of the roadway. They now MUST wait until the entire crosswalk is empty of both pedestrians and crossing guards.
“The Niagara Regional Police would like to remind all cyclists and motorists to obey these new amendments and help keep our children and crossing guards safe,” said Sergeant Josh Klop of the Niagara Regional Police Services.
The Town of Pelham partnered with the Niagara Regional Police and all local municipalities to launch the Bill 31 Awareness Campaign in time for the new school year.
“We ask the community to help us ensure students and crossing guards stay safe when travelling to and from school,” said Pelham By-Law Enforcement Officer Craig Genesse. “Please obey all traffic rules and remember that School Zones and Community Safety Zones are listed at 40 km/h.”
School crossing guards fall under the Highway Traffic Act, and it is the law for all drivers to stop in the presence of a crossing guard displaying a stop sign. Drivers who violate this can be fined between $150 to $500 and face 3 demerit points. Fines double in Community Safety Zones.
