The Town of Pelham, in collaboration with Pelham Fire and the Niagara Auxiliary O.P.P, is hosting a child car seat clinic to ensure the safety of children travelling in vehicles.
Certified Child Car Seat Technicians will be on site in Pelham to answer questions and help inspect, install, and make corrections to car seats. Anyone interested in participating can do so on:
Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Pelham Fire Station One (177 Highway 20 West, Fonthill) from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
No appointments are necessary and Pelham Firefighters will be on site with fire trucks to entertain children while caregivers partake in the clinic.
“We know that approximately 95% of all child car seats are installed incorrectly and we encourage everyone who travels with a car seat in their vehicle to attend,” said Craig Genesse, Pelham By-Law Enforcement Officer and Auxiliary Sergeant with the Niagara O.P.P.
The Ministry of Transportation mandates that young children use car seats while travelling in vehicles, while booster seats must be used for children who have outgrown car seats.
Health Canada reports that correctly used child car seats can reduce the likelihood of injury or death in a crash by 75%, and that booster seats can reduce the chance of injury 59% better than seat belts alone.
New mandatory child car seat and booster seat requirements came into effect on January 1, 2012. Visit the Transport Canada Child Safety website for further details.
