On Monday, September 19, 2016, Pelham Council unanimously approved the Pelham Community Centre site plan to facilitate construction.
“Council is excited to approve this site plan because it will assist in creating a more complete community in Fonthill,” said Mayor Dave Augustyn. “The new Pelham Community Centre will be built adjacent to the public square and within walking distance to stores, restaurants, a medical centre and residential housing.”
The facility will be located at the corner of two new streets – Wellspring Way and Shaw Avenue – as part of the Village of East Fonthill Subdivision, which Council also approved on Monday, September 19, 2016.
The elevations and landscape plans are consistent with the East Fonthill Mixed Use Centre Site Master Plan.
The Pelham Community Centre will sit across from the new Wellspring Niagara Centre, which will offer regional programs to cancer patients, their families and caregivers. The planned piazza/public square will feature amenities for residents to participate in informal gatherings and new community events and activities. The site plan also allows room for future transit development along Wellspring Way.
Town Planning and Public Works staff evaluated the site plan according to building appearance, landscaping, elevations, traffic access, walkways, driveways, and parking areas. The plan also accommodates accessibility for persons with disabilities and offers bicycle parking for active transportation. The plan further includes innovative ways to make storm water and wastewater facilities, and garbage and recycling storage, aesthetically pleasing within the pedestrian-focused, walkable area.
