Hosted by the Town of Pelham and the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation
You’re invited! Help the Town of Pelham and the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation paint a picturesque Greenbelt Street Mural in Ridgeville (Canboro Road at Effingham Road) on Friday, June 12, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
The Town of Pelham and the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation are hosting a community event to help celebrate the importance of the Greenbelt, build community spirit, integrate public art, help teach students about art, science, health and geography, and create a traffic calming feature.
“The Town of Pelham is delighted to partner with the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation to facilitate this public art community event,” said Mayor Dave Augustyn. “Because the Greenbelt covers 60% of our community, Pelham is the ideal place to have a mural featuring greenbelt elements."
A certified art teacher, who has previously done similar projects inside schools, will help participants design a beautiful mural incorporating important elements of Pelham’s Greenbelt (such as vines, tender fruit trees, the Comfort Maple, farmers and farmers’ market, etc.), and assist them with painting it on the chosen intersection.
"We look forward to deepening students' understanding of, and appreciation for, nature and everything the Greenbelt has to offer," said Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation representative Robin Garrett.
Canboro Road (at Effingham Road) was selected as the site of the mural because it is known for its roadside farm markets and for connecting Fonthill and Fenwick. It is also a busy intersection that could benefit from traffic calming. The public is advised that Canboro Road at Effingham will be closed for the event from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on June 12, 2015. Access to the Bulk Water Station will remain open.
The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation, who will provide all the supplies (paint and brushes) and hire the art teacher. The Town will organize the necessary road closure and pavement cleaning beforehand. Local downtown Ridgeville businesses are also eager to host the event in their area and look forward to welcoming the community for the day.
