Pelham Fire Services is proud to announce the winners of this year’s Fire Prevention Week contests.
For the story contest, the winners are:
1st place - Abigail Shatford
2nd place - Elizabeth Hogan
3rd place - Eryn van der Weyden
Twelve-year-old Abigail wrote her story about fire safety and babysitting. Here is an excerpt from her winning story:
“The meat in the pan was bubbling, and a small fire had started. Even more alarming was Johnny standing there, oh-so-innocent, ready to grab the pan handle. Charlotte only hesitated a moment. She charged towards Johnny, yelling. Johnny’s eyes widened and his arm shot up towards the handle of the pan. His chubby little fingers closed around it, but before he could yank, Charlotte swiftly moved the pan. She grabbed the lid and slammed it down on the pan, and the fire coughed, then died.”
Runner up Elizabeth touchingly wrote about her friend Andy, who perished in a fire. Eight-year-old Eryn submitted a story about fire hazards in the kitchen, which was also this year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week. The winners each received a smoke alarm and a cheque for $100, $50 and $25 respectively.
Pelham Fire Services also hosted the following contests at the Pelham Library during Fire Prevention Week:
Race to suit up in fire bunker gear the fastest
winner: Mia Colangelo, age 7, in 26 seconds
Race to fit pots with their corresponding lids to restrict fires
winner: Walter Greenwill, age 11, in 27 seconds
Both winners took home a smoke alarm and fun fire safety DVD.
“Congratulations to all the contest winners and thank you to everyone who came out to help make fire safety a priority during Fire Prevention Week,” said Pelham Fire Chief Bob Lymburner.
