Niagara Region Public Health has identified the first infection of mumps in Niagara. Mumps is a viral infection of the salivary glands, that is spread person-to-person through coughing, sneezing, talking or coming into contact with a person’s saliva (i.e. sharing drinks and food, kissing). Symptoms include:
If you think you may have mumps and need to see a doctor, you must call ahead to the doctor’s office, walk-in clinic, or emergency department. This will allow health care staff to prepare appropriately. Since mumps is now circulating in Niagara, and easily spreads from person to person, Public Health is urging all residents to have their vaccination up to date: Children 2 doses:
Adults
Pregnant Women
Travellers
If travelling outside North America:
