Communities in Bloom
Who Are We?
"Communities in Bloom" is a national non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community participation and the challenge of national competition.
The "Pelham Communities in Bloom" committee was first formed in 2000 as a volunteer committee under the auspices of the Town of Pelham to assist in the annual competition.
What Do We Do?
Since initially being involved with the competion, the committee has broadened its horizons and has sponsored several other annual events. The Trillium awards, first held in 2001, recognizes and thanks individual residents and businesses for adding to the beauty of Pelham. Front yards of entrants as viewed from the nearest roadways are judged to find properties that are neat, have exuberant flower beds, display different plant materials and innovative design or are part of an attractive streetscape. Judging generally takes place the last week of July and awards are presented in September.
Also, in July of each year since 2002, is the Pelham Communities in Bloom annual Garden Tour, your opportunity to view some of Pelham's most beautiful gardens. While the Trillium awards are a competition of front yards only, as seen from the street, our Garden Tour invites you to wander into every corner of a few select Pelham properties, chat with the owners, and exchange ideas. What a great way to spend the afternoon!
A new annual fundraising event that was started in June of 2004 was our Pelham Communities in Bloom barbeque which is held in front of Sobeys. Join us the Saturday of Father's Day weekend for a sausage, burger or hot dog.
All proceeds from our fundraising efforts go to the purchase of entrance signs and other beautification projects in Pelham. To date we have installed "Welcome to" Fenwick, Ridgeville, North Pelham, Effingham signs and as part of Fonthill's 150th Anniversary, a "Welcome to Fonthill" sign.
To promote community participation. Spring and Fall Community Participation Days are held to encourage volunteers to participate in activities that improve the beauty of the town. Activities vary from the removal of graffiti and posters off poles, the painting of rusted signs and garbage cans to the planting for gardens.
The committee encourages homeowners and businesses alike to help make Pelham a prettier town and actively pursues community involvement through volunteerism.
