Today, the Town of Pelham becomes the first Canadian town of its size to receive the coveted Bicycle Friendly Community designation. Awarded during the 2013 Ontario Bike Summit, Pelham joins Ottawa, Toronto, Waterloo, and Hamilton in accepting a Silver designation—no municipality has yet attained Gold.
The Share the Road Cycling Coalition, an Ontario-based organization promoting bicycling through advocacy, selected Pelham for its commitment to healthy lifestyles, active tranportation and safe cycling.
“Council strongly supports cycling initiatives and appreciates the hard work of the Working Group in preparing our successful application,” said Mayor Dave Augustyn.
Transportation Minister Glen Murray and Share the Road representatives presented the award to Councillor Peter Papp, Pelham Active Transportation Committee Chair Bea Clark, and Bicycle Friendly Communities Application Working Group Members Phil Bergen, David Hunt, Lisa Gallant, Ken Forgeron, and Town Staff, who accepted on behalf of Pelham. Other working group members include Rob Visser, Scott Elliot and Councillor Catherine King.
Pelham resident and working group member David Hunt was also honoured during the 2013 Ontario Bike Summit by the Share the Road Cycling Coalition for his advocacy, leadership and dedication to "Building Bicycle Friendly Communities" in Ontario.
To engange all age groups and skill levels in cycling activities, the Town offers programs like the “Kids Bike Camp” and courses like "Ready, Set, Cycle" and "Rediscover Your Bike".
